In the wake of Baynam Books Press’s closure, I have made contingency plans to get my work out there. This starts with a crucial submission concerning my queer horror novella, Coffin Lurker. There is a chance that all three of my queer horror novellas will be published by a press I am in contact with. I am in the middle of making revisions to Coffin Lurker, and depending on the response by editors, my two other queer horror novellas can also be in play, potentially included in a three-book deal. Still, it is presumptive to say at this point. A lot rides on what they think about Coffin Lurker.
I have reason to be excited about the results of a prize I entered another manuscript into this February. I actually think I might come away with a win. Regardless, if the manuscript doesn’t get awarded the significant cash prize and publishing contract, I have high hopes presenting it to agents via query.
Also, I have just finished a round of querries for a promising manuscript. As yet, there has been only one rejection to speak of, so if agents begin requesting the entire manuscript for further evaluation, I feel good about my chances of landing representation. That would be huge! Submissions will be a thing of the past. I can finally just focus my efforts on writing and nothing else.
As for open calls, there remain several submissions in the pipeline this 2026. Any acceptances will open the door for the others, so it’s not just about one book. It’s a domino effect.
Despite BBP’s sudden closure being a temporary setback, there is reason to be excited about 2026. I finally ironed out my query letters and made them as air-tight and difficult to refuse as possible. Writers typically refrain from making formal announcements until confirmation is made, so I declined to name names. Just know. I didn’t just fold after BBP shut its doors. I am still hustling.
